Shoes for tiny tots

As soon as a child starts to learn to walk it is important that you buy them the right shoes. Not only will it help your children with their ability to walk but it will also mean they remain comfortable. One of the best choices for parents who are looking to buy their child their first pair of shoes would be Start Rite.

Start Rite is a company with a strong history of creating children’s shoes that dates back a very long time. The business is based in Norwich in the UK and this is where it was initially founded. James Smith was a leather worker who was responsible for many revolutions in the shoe industry and he was the first person to create ready to wear footwear for customers. This revolutionised both the adult shoe industry as well as the one for children.

Another important figure in the shoe industry was Charles Winter who made the first shoe with a sewing machine in the 19th century. The grandson of Mr Winter is James Southall who was responsible for developing children’s shoes that were very different to the ones made for the adults. He had a focus on creating a shoe that would prevent damage to children’s feet as they went about their lives.

The name Start Rite was first used in the 1920s and by the 1940s the popularity of the shoe had grown to such an extent that the company could not meet the demand. It was in the 1950s that the company decided to exclusively produce children’s shoes and they were responsible for many innovations that occurred during this decade, and afterwards.

Shoes that were specifically tailored to the different shape of children’s feet were created. These meant that a child’s growth was improved and not inhibited by a restrictive shoe. It was in 1955 that Queen Elizabeth gave the Royal Warrant to Start Rite shoes.

The trademark, Start Rite, was first registered in the 1960s because it had become so lucrative for the Southall family. This was the beginning of the modern era of the company and it later received a second Royal Warrant from the Queen. An interesting statistic is that since the company’s inception more than 1500 pairs of shoes have been purchased by the Royal family from the company.

In the 1990s the company started expanding its designs and became an innovator in shoes for older school children. In the first decade of the 20th century it continued manufacturing new shoes for children and its shoes are now available in hundreds of retailers across the UK and the rest of the world.

The company were also the first brand of shoes to start selling online and this kind of innovation in the industry is something the company has become known for. All parents
