Celebrating the Olympics: five best party outfits

2012 has been one of the biggest party years in British history. First we celebrated the amazing Diamond Jubilee and now the greatest sporting event in the world has landed in our backyard; the Olympic Games. So as the medals start pouring in, what better reason is there to throw a party than to celebrate winning bronze, silver and gold?

Like the incredible opening ceremony, the 2012 Olympics has been a celebration of all things beautifully British; from musical icons to our famous flag. When you’re throwing an Olympics party, it makes sense to embrace this theme and find a costume that celebrates our great country.

With this in mind, here is a look at the top five best fancy dress costumes that will help you celebrate in style this summer:

Flaunt the Union Jack

Nothing screams British culture like our fabulous flag; the iconic red, blue and white of the Union Jack. Not only is it present during all of the important British events throughout history, it’s also become synonymous with British pop culture. This includes everything from God Save the Queen by the Sex Pistols through to the ultimate 90s pop band, The Spice Girls. Gerri Halliwell also famously wore her Union Jack dress during the Spice World movie, and it’s a fun and playful fancy dress costume for adults.

The Royal Approach

You’d be hard pressed to find anyone more British than the Royal Family. From the gentle, scarf clad face of her Majesty the Queen, through to the youthful appearances of Kate, Prince William and Prince Harry – nothing says Team GB like our historic monarchy.

There are some great Royal family masks to choose from with fancy dress retailers but be sure to match them with the right clothes – like Kate’s famous blue dress or Will’s classic chinos and gilet.

Sporting Heroes

Get behind our sporting heroes and dress like a British sporting icon. Put your marathon kit on to support Paula Radcliffe, or wear some Lycra like cycling star Bradley Wiggins.

Team GB

In honour of all things British, a fun and creative party idea is to invite guests to dress in famous English things – starting with the letter B. So whether you emulate Boris and his interesting hairstyle or dress like the British pub food classic bangers and mash – the golden rule is everything British and everything starting with B!

Flash Back

While we all agree (with a certain degree of bias) that London is the best Olympics so far, it certainly follows a long list of incredible host countries throughout history. Take inspiration from the Olympics of old and get your guests to dress like a host country.

If you really want to step back in time then why not trace these pivotal games all the way back to their origin in Ancient Greece?  Whether you dress as one of their iconic heroes, including Odysseus and Heracles (Hercules), or one of their many gods, such as Zeus, Aphrodite and Poseidon, this is a great way to embrace this sporting event from its earliest beginnings.
