This been provided by BullGuard Internet Security who provide an all in one antivirus and internet security solution.

To keep your child safe when they go online, there are various steps that you can take. Some of these are things you can do to stop your child from having access to things you do not wish them to see, and others involve talking to them about what is and isn’t safe to do or talk about online, or encouraging them to use one site instead of another.

Parental controls:
Computers, mobile phones, and games consoles where you can access the internet have parental controls. These allow you to create rules that will control which websites your child can and can’t visit, how long they can stay on line and what words they can and can’t search for. Different equipment will allow you to do different things, but generally parental controls allow you to block certain websites and e-mail addresses by adding them to filter lists. You can then password protect these lists so that your child can’t change them.

Some internet service providers also have child safety measures that they offer, so it’s also a good idea to talk to them to find out what they can provide.

Talk to your child about internet safety:
Sit with your child and talk to them about why you are setting these restrictions. Explain to them the sort of sites that you think are suitable and why some others aren’t. Help them to understand the dangers that are out there. If they know why they need to stay within the boundaries that you set they are more likely to do so, explain in the same way as you would when setting boundaries for where they can play and who with when they’re outside.

Stress to your child the importance of keeping personal information safe. Teach your child what is and isn’t acceptable for them to talk about with people online and that some people may not be who they seem to be. Make sure they understand that if anything happens that they’re not sure about then you are there to listen and you won’t be cross with them. If they accidentally go onto a website that’s not suitable, they should tell you so. This way you can delete it from the computer’s history and add it to your list of unsuitable websites.

Introduce them to child friendly websites and search engines as these are designed to filter out sites and content that is unsuitable for children to see.

Learn ‘how to’ for yourself:
One of the best ways of keeping your child safe is by learning about the internet for yourself. If you don’t know how it works, or what threats exist, it will be much harder to know what to block your child from seeing or doing while on there. There are lots of courses designed for adults to help them learn more about computing and the internet, many of which are free.

Keep your eye on things:
Keep the computer that connects to the internet in a family room with the screen facing out into the room where you can see what’s happening. This way you can see if they are using a chat room or forum, who they are talking to, and what they are saying.

Use the ‘history’ on the computer to monitor which sites your child is accessing and check them for yourself. If you see something you don’t like, you can then block it and/or talk to your child about it.

If you are worried about your child accessing the internet when you are not there, then remove the ability for them to do so, by password protecting the internet access so that they can only access with your permission.

Trend Micro, makers or internet security products have come up with a handy list of top tips for protecting your kids online.

· Keep all computers in common areas.

· Agree to time limits for using the Internet and all social devices.

· Keep software security up-to-date.

· Talk with your kids about entering personal information online.

· Run a manual scan with your software security and check browser history.

· Set profiles on social networking sites to private.

· Encourage children to be respectful of others.

· Teach children to have multiple passwords that are NOT associated with names, nicknames or commonly found information over the net.

· Most importantly, keep informed about the latest outbreaks and dangers on the Internet.

A recent survey by Trend Micro has revealed that, despite more than 50% of parents claiming not to have a clue about what’s going on in their teens’ digital world, only 3% of them actually monitor their kids’ online behaviour.

But it seems that, whilst the majority of parents do have these concerns, they don’t wish to – or don’t know how to – enforce controls on their kids. 97% admitted they still continued to leave their kids in an uncontrolled environment.

“The best way for a parent to overcome their fears about technology and what their children are up to online is to take the time to have a look at the technology their children are using,” said Will Gardner, CEO, Childnet. “Better still, get them to guide you through it. A conversation on how to keep safe and look after others online is a must.”

Trend Micro internet security 2009 software has enhanced parental controls. This means that parents can better tailor controls depending on the particular family member. New functionalities include the ability to control the date and time each child can go on the Internet and also the option to specify categories of information (such as home addresses, telephone numbers, passwords, etc.) they do not wish to be sent from a computer.

The child-friendly software program provides children with all the benefits of the Internet without leaving them vulnerable to the risks of the digital world and provides peace of mind for their parents.

Hot on the heels of Gordon Brown’s 2012 broadband pledge, to give £300m to aid low income households in the UK to connect to the Internet at home, the initiative is a timely reminder for families to embrace online security and safety measures.

Raj Curwen, CEO of So Protect Me comments, “With more kids going online than ever before, the initiative provides practical online safety advice to young people and their parents. That’s a message we’re keen to support. With Safe4Kidz, our goal has been to produce a child-friendly approach to Internet safety which gives maximum protection, minimum disruption to normal PC use and near-zero effort to deploy and maintain”.

While surfing, Safe4Kidz provides access to great web content for study and leisure. Aimed at pre-teens, Safe4Kidz approved sites are perfect for Key Stage 1 (ages 4-7) and Key Stage 2 (aged 7-11) children. Family requests are encouraged and newly approved sites are included in online product updates. For ease of use, sites are categorised into topics such as English, Maths, Science, as well as leisure topics including Television, Film and Games.

Raj Curwen continued, “Safe4Kidz also blocks offensive words and terms in search results so you can let your children use Google and Wikipedia for example, without the fear of them stumbling across inappropriate pages. And with features such as time-based web and PC access, game and program controls, social network age-rated protection, credit card and shopping channel protections, etc, Safe4Kidz is an ideal safety choice for parents of pre-teens.”
