It appears that traditional quality time is evolving into ‘techtime’ as more and more parents are getting to grips with technology, like social networking and gaming, in a bid not to miss out on spending quality time with their children.

So are you one of the growing numbers of parents who want to spend more time with their kids? Well experts are now encouraging mums and dads to embrace technology as a form of quality time in order to avoid it becoming a barrier to family interaction. So it seems that when it comes to kids and technology, don’t feel you need to beat it, just join it’!

This advice comes in response to the revelation in a report commissioned by Energizer that shows many mums worry that new technology has altered the amount of quality time they spend with their children. Specifically, they claim that their kids use of things like computer games and social networking can prevent the family from bonding.

Experts have suggested that parents respond to this growing sense of disconnection by changing their attitude to technology used by their children, just as they embraced TV and now, as revealed by the report, view it as a way of sharing quality time and positive moments. But would you be ready to take the lead in learning to use your children’s technology, such as computer games or Facebook?

Dr Pat Spungin has a live online discussion at 3pm, Friday 4th March to discuss her view that parents have to embrace ‘techtime’ as a means of bringing the family closer together. After the show, you can watch on demand but prior to it you can submit questions.

Trend Micro, makers or internet security products have come up with a handy list of top tips for protecting your kids online.

· Keep all computers in common areas.

· Agree to time limits for using the Internet and all social devices.

· Keep software security up-to-date.

· Talk with your kids about entering personal information online.

· Run a manual scan with your software security and check browser history.

· Set profiles on social networking sites to private.

· Encourage children to be respectful of others.

· Teach children to have multiple passwords that are NOT associated with names, nicknames or commonly found information over the net.

· Most importantly, keep informed about the latest outbreaks and dangers on the Internet.

A recent survey by Trend Micro has revealed that, despite more than 50% of parents claiming not to have a clue about what’s going on in their teens’ digital world, only 3% of them actually monitor their kids’ online behaviour.

But it seems that, whilst the majority of parents do have these concerns, they don’t wish to – or don’t know how to – enforce controls on their kids. 97% admitted they still continued to leave their kids in an uncontrolled environment.

“The best way for a parent to overcome their fears about technology and what their children are up to online is to take the time to have a look at the technology their children are using,” said Will Gardner, CEO, Childnet. “Better still, get them to guide you through it. A conversation on how to keep safe and look after others online is a must.”

Trend Micro internet security 2009 software has enhanced parental controls. This means that parents can better tailor controls depending on the particular family member. New functionalities include the ability to control the date and time each child can go on the Internet and also the option to specify categories of information (such as home addresses, telephone numbers, passwords, etc.) they do not wish to be sent from a computer.
