Some childcare experts now believe that wrapping a child in this way mimics the pressure that a baby feels while in the womb, and creates a increased sensation of security. The demand for this trend is so high that sales of swaddling clothes has shot up by more than 61% in the past year alone, so new research has revealed.

Swaddling is an age old practice where new born babies were wrapped tightly within a cloth, thus restricting their movements, and is recorded as far back as 4000BC, to the Ancient Greek and Roman times. When new theories regarding baby development took hold in the 1960′s it virtually disappeared as mothers were urged to dress their baby is clothes that allowed movement as they grew, such as babygrows.

A study in the British Medical Journal that was published in 2009 also deemed it potentially dangerous and reported that 25% of babies who succumbed to cot death had been swaddles at the time. The problem here is that cot deaths are so rare, the sample they used for the study was very small, and the NHS branded the risk as coming from an unreliable study.

The trend has returned with such gusto that Debenhams, the major high street retail chain, now have a separate section on their website for swaddling clothes. This contains a varied selection of both blankets and other wraps that can be used to swaddle new born babies as well as keep them warm.

Adults whose feet have reached their maximum size don’t have the same difficulties buying shoes for themselves; at least they know what size to look for.  However, a child’s feet change sizes on a steady (but not regular) basis, and choosing the right size at any given stage of development is really quite crucial.

Especially for toddlers who are just learning to walk, the correct shoe size is an absolute must, since shoes that are either too small or to large may very easily affect the child’s posture and the way the rest of his or her body grows.  Aside from creating difficulties in walking as they’re starting out, poorly fitting shoes during childhood can cause a lot of problems later in life, so you have to get it right.

The best option is to consult and get measurements from someone with experience in children’s shoes – if you’re lucky the shoe salesperson can be of invaluable assistance.  However, here are a few suggestions for doing ‘homework’ before you go shopping, so you’ll have a pretty good idea in advance.  Hopefully you’ll also save yourself and your child some grief.

Measure the child’s feet – both of them – by using a sheet of sturdy blank paper.  Draw a straight line on the paper and have the child stand flat on it, no curled toes etc.  Mark the paper at the end of the big toe and at the heel on each foot, since there is often a difference in size between the two.  When you take this measurement, have them wear their thickest socks, or the ones they’ll be wearing for the next few months (thickness-wise).

It’s a good idea to measure in both inches and centimetres, for U.S. and European sizes.  Any UK store can give you both measurements, but just so you’ll be aware, UK sizes are about ½ less for boys and  1½ less for girls.  Now, when you are ready to have the child try on shoes, remember to look for the longer size if the child’s feet were different in length.

During the trying-on process, the old trick of pressing your thumb on the toe of the shoe still works as well as anything.  If the big toe is pressing against the tip of the shoe, you need to think longer.  If there seems to be extra space between the child’s toe and the shoe’s toe, try a bit shorter.  Have the child walk around, both to test for comfort and to make sure the heel isn’t slipping off – if that’s the case you’ve gone too long.

Now you just have to remember that your child’s feet are growing; the rule of thumb is to add a half size but no more.  That way there’s a bit of grow room, but not too much, since you don’t want the shoes falling off before the child grows into them.  The idea is for both you and your children to feel comfortable with the shoes you buy – each time – until they are old enough to buy their own.

Back-to-school shopping is a good way for children to get excited about going back. They will be looking forward to finding out who their new teachers will be as well as seeing friends they have not seen all summer. School is a good routine for children and once back they will quickly adapt back into it. Parents can find it hard to make the transition from the kids summer holiday back into a normal routine. This is especially true for parents who stay at home. Getting back into the habit of waking up early can be particularly challenging. This article will now look at some excellent tips for how to get back into that routine.

A good idea would be to start waking your children up earlier as it gets closer to the start of the school year. By gradually making the time they wake up earlier they will find the shock of having to wake up very early for school much less intense.

Bring variety to packed lunches will also be a great way to get children back into the routine. Having something a bit more exciting at lunchtime than the standard sandwiches will give children something to look forward to. This can be challenging for parents as many schools ban allergy items such as peanuts. Try putting in some left-over food or some cheese and crackers to give them something a bit different.

For younger children just starting school, the social transition can be made easier by practising some of the activities that will be needed in school. Helping you child learn how to pack and unzip a backpack can make them feel less nervous about starting school. To help your child look forward to school always talk about it in a positive manner.

It will be a good idea for parents to follow their child’s school work. Keep in contact with the head of the school and the class teacher and make sure you know the dates that work is due in and on what days the different homework subjects will be.

Make sure your child knows you are doing this as it will help motivate them. A good way of being in touch with the school is to volunteer for programmes they may run. Finally, it is a good idea to know that you can ask the school for help, they will often be able to help about children’s educational and developmental needs.
