Your child being involved in an accident, such as a road traffic accident, is a horrible, scary and traumatic experience for both your child and yourself. Within the turmoil of emotions of fear, relief and anger, and the information from your GP that your child has suffered a serious head injury, eventually the thought ‘What do I do now?’ will crop up. And it’s a horrible feeling when you don’t know the answer.

First things first, let yourself feel whatever emotions you are dealing with. Until you have taken some time to grief you won’t be able to access the situation and work out what to do. Then consider seeking legal advice, as you and your child are entitled to compensation.

Head injuries are very complicated injuries. They often have immediate effects to memory or movability, just to mention some examples, but symptoms of a head injury can also emerge long after the injury was sustained. There are many such factors influencing a legal case, and although a free advisory service such as the Citizen’s Advice Bureau offer guidance, and your local solicitor may be able to advise you on general aspects of personal injury claims, where a head or brain injury is involved, it is recommended to seek out a specialist lawyer.

The following shows the other factors that need to be considered during the legal case:

First, the accident itself. A lawyer specialising in this kind of personal injury will present the accident to court in the manner that best illustrates the case. They will be experienced with using reconstructions or expert evidence in this area, and familiar with the kind of medical evidence courts will require.

Second, the severity of the consequences. Head injuries can result in significant alterations to the victim’s daily life, and may impact significantly on their school career and employment future. Lawyers with detailed knowledge of this area frequently have established connections with experts in areas such as physiotherapists, neurologists or other medical practitioners. Their professional opinions will show the court the seriousness of the injury, and the continuous support, both financially and emotionally, which the family and victim will need.

Third, and most importantly, damages. A specialist lawyer is best suited to calculate the correct level of damages that deserve to be claimed. They will also be able to advise on claiming ‘interim’ payments. These are damages that are paid to the person claiming compensation where their claim looks likely to succeed, and permit them to put certain arrangements in place before the case has concluded. Such arrangements can include adjustments to your home to facilitate for your child’s new needs or the costs of rehabilitation courses and support programmes.

Fourth, timing. As mentioned above, not all consequences of a head or brain injury are immediately apparent. In cases where the symptoms take time to fully develop, a specialist solicitor is able to advise on how and when to commence a claim.
Finally, living arrangements. A specialist will be able to assist in arranging affairs, such as living facilities and school needs, so that the consequences of the injury are anticipated and provided for. They will be able to help with matters like power of attorney, dealing with third parties, and putting you in touch with specialists who are equipped to assist your child manage their altered daily life.

Seeking the help of a specialist lawyer is daunting, as their price is higher than that of a non-specialised solicitor. Yet they have the skills to gain the right amount of damages for your child’s current and future needs. When looking for a lawyer, be sure that you take the time to get to know them. A court case of this topic can be a long and emotional journey, so you need someone by your side who you trust, who knows what they are doing, and who is willingly to talk you through the procedure in an understanding and patient manner.

My Child Won’t Eat by Carlos González

It is a universal worry of parents that their baby or toddler is eating enough, as they all have an idea of how much their child should be putting away. Carlos González, who is both a paediatrician and a father, has set out to allay those fears as he explores why children often refuse to eat, how growth charts are full of pitfalls, and the different ways in with a child’s calorific needs are determined by activity and growth.

How to enjoy mealtimes your children and without worry

In ‘My Child Won’t Eat’, Carlos discusses how eating problems first start and how best to avoid them, as well as using true stories from real mothers who describe the torment and the anguish they have gone through in their ongoing battle to get their kids to eat.

Carlos González reassures parents that children know how much they need to eat and explains why a parent’s only involvement should be in providing healthy food choices. Forcing a child to eat more than he needs can only lead to tears, tantrums and, eventually, possibly even obesity.

Questions Carlos González answers include:

• Why won’t my child eat?

• How much does a child need to eat?

• Why don’t children like vegetables?

• What does it mean to breastfeed on demand?

• When should my baby start to eat solid foods?

New figures from the NHS Information Centre have revealed that the proportion of children in England who have reached obesity by the time they are in their final year at primary school is on the rise. During 2010/11, 19% of children in year 6 that were measured as part of NCMP, the National Child Measurement Programme, were found to be obese, compared to the 2009/10 figure of 18.7%, and 14.2% in 2006/7.

A further 14.4% of year 6 children were overweight in this years study, compared to 14.6% in 2009/10 and 14.2% in 2006/7. The proportion of children in reception year that were obese has fallen to 9.4% however, compared to 9.8% in 2009/10, and 9.9% in 2006/7. The overweight proportion for the same group was 13.2%, compared to 13.3% in 2009/10 and 13% in 2006/7.

The NCMP measures both the weight and height of children in reception class, aged 4-5, an year 6, aged 10-11, in English primary schools to establish how prevalent pupils are who are underweight, a healthy weight, overweight and obese. Since it was first introduced in 2005, year on year participation has increased and more than 1m pupils take part, around 93% of those eligible.

The study also showed that in 2010/11:

Of England’s 10 regions (Strategic Health Authority, or SHA, areas); London SHA recorded the highest prevalence of obesity for both year groups – at 11.1 per cent of reception children and 21.9 per cent of Year 6 Children. South Central SHA recorded the lowest prevalence for both age groups at 8.1 per cent of Reception year and 16.5 per cent of Year 6 pupils.

Obesity is more prevalent in schools in deprived areas, as also noted in previous years. 6.9 per cent of Reception Year children from schools in the least deprived areas were obese, compared to 12.1 per cent of children from schools in the most deprived areas. Among Year 6 children; 13.8 per cent were obese from schools in the least deprived areas, compared to 23.7 per cent of children from schools in the most deprived areas.

Obesity is more prevalent in urban areas, as also noted in previous years. 9.7 per cent of Reception Year children from schools in urban areas were obese, compared to 7.8 per cent of children from schools in village areas. Among Year 6 children; 19.6 per cent were obese from schools in urban areas, compared to 15.9 per cent of children from schools in the village areas.

The proportion of Reception Year children recorded as underweight was 1.0 per cent; a greater proportion that in 2009/10 (0.9 per cent) but a smaller proportion than in 2006/07 (1.3 per cent). The proportion of Year 6 children recorded as underweight was 1.3 per cent; similar to the previous year (1.3 per cent) and a smaller proportion than in 2006/07 (1.5 per cent)

Chief Executive of the NHS Information Centre Tim Straughan said: “More than one million children in England are measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme, which shows today that while the proportion of four-to-five year olds who are obese has fallen, the opposite has happened among 10 and 11-year-olds.

“This means that while fewer than one in 10 children in Reception Year are obese; for children in their final year of primary school this prevalence is nearly one in every five.”

Hand washing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of contagious disease when done correctly. It is important that we raise awareness about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Sensible hand washing in communities not only prevents the spread of contagious symptoms like colds, but also more serious diseases like hepatitis A and meningitis.

Recent figures also suggested that schoolchildren are not getting enough sleep to stay alert in class. The research has come out of the Schools Health Education Unit and shows that half of the girls aged between 14 and 15 said they were not getting enough sleep every night. For boys, the figure was less, but still significant.

The data that forms the survey was gathered from over 80,000 children from schools across the UK last year. It showed that the number of children who are getting eight hours of sleep a night fell as they got older. 80% of children aged between 12 and 13 said they got eight hours of sleep, but when compared with 14 to 15-year-old age group this figure fell to just over 60%. Half of those questioned said they did not get enough sleep to be healthy.

Over 20% of boys in school years eight and ten said that they spent over two hours playing computer games the day before the survey was conducted. The figure is significantly less for girls at around 7%.

Just below 15% of all the students asked said that they spent over two hours a day watching television. The number of children who spend two hours a day on homework was less than 3%, astonishingly nearly 40% of students said that they did not spend any time on homework.

Netmums.com is a parenting website that is run by Cathy Ranson and she commented about the survey, “Parents will find the study very interesting, particularly the fact that children are admitting that they do not get enough sleep.

“In the world today it seems that every child has a computer, television, or mobile phone at their disposal to keep them awake so in a way these figures are not very surprising.” Another part of the study looked at the prevalence of bullying in schools and one study found that one in every three girls who is aged between 10 and 11 was afraid to go to school on occasion because of bullying.

The report also found that boys were less afraid of bullying and as they got older it became less of a problem for them. In the study it was found that one in every 10 boys admitted that in the last year they had bullied someone.

Around 6% of the boys surveyed who were aged 14 and 15 said that they feared going to school because of bullying. The coordinator for the Anti-Bullying Alliance is Sue steel and she has said that these figures show that bullying is still a serious concern for schools.

The most common cause is a fungal infection called tinea capitis, sometimes known as ringworm. Symptoms include loss of hair usually in round patches on the scalp; eyebrows and eyelashes are also often affected. Diagnosis is fairly easy with a microscopic testing for fungus, and treatment involves antifungal medication and shampoo in an eight-week regimen.

A more serious cause is alopecia areata, which results in the sudden appearance of very smooth round or oval bald patches and sometimes ridging or pitting of the nails. It is believed to be an autoimmune disease that attacks hair follicles. Little is known about the cause, and though some treatments have shown promise in promoting hair growth, there is no guarantee that hair loss will not recur.

High fever, surgery and prolonged emotional stress are some of the accepted causes of telogen effluvium, in which the life cycle of the hair is interrupted and stalled in the dormant, or telogen, stage. Diagnosis in this case is usually based on the child’s recent history, and once the triggering event is over, hair usually returns to its normal growth cycle without treatment.

Trauma to the hair shaft is fairly common, resulting in most cases from the use of chemicals in perms, or tightly pulled ponytails and braids. It can also be the result of a child’s compulsive hair pulling or twisting, marked by patches of broken hairs, not by complete hair loss. In this case treatment consists of some type of behavioral or relaxation therapy, and normal hair growth resumes when the stress is relieved.

Parents have youngsters mightily confused about what tooth fairies would want with these little pearls of enamel and how they are recycled in the world of myth and legend.

Amazingly inventive suggestions include using them as bricks to build a fairy’s castle, magical seeds that spawn plants and flowers when planted in the ground and of course, the old favourite, that they become dazzling stars in the night sky. A rather less enchanting tale is that they are used in dentures – probably not the most heartening tale to tell a young impressionable child.

Possibly the most common answer parents use in response to their child’s questions about the nocturnal activities of the tooth fairy, is that fairies can build castles with them. It’s probably the most common, but hardly the most appealing.

Most dreamers prefer to imagine fairies dwelling in lush green forests, surrounded by ferns, toadstools and tiny homes built of twigs and moss. The picture of gleaming pearly white buildings made of tooth enamel just doesn’t quite fit.

Ancient housewives’ tales did tell of witches using children’s teeth for their devilish deeds and traditionally it became the norm to bury a child’s teeth to hide them. This would help keep them out of the grimy hands of witches, who would otherwise use them to cast nasty spells. So, the story of planting teeth as seeds from which beautiful flowers can flourish is an insightful one after all.

A favourite tale for many is one where the Tooth Fairy collects teeth and miraculously produces a star. And of course, the healthier and cleaner the tooth is, the brighter the star will be – a clever motivator for children who avoid cleaning their teeth.

It is pleasant gaze at the night sky and think that somewhere a star was born from an innocent child’s tooth. Or maybe parents’ romantic notions of the tooth fairy no longer hold the imagination of youngsters and they would rather settle for the cash under the pillow.

Colgate are running a huge new promotion to highlight the importance of instilling good dental hygiene into children from any early age. By getting children into a routine from an early age will set them on the road to a lifetime of good dental hygiene, as our teeth are incredibly precious and by having a routine before their adult teeth come in sets them in good stead.

The big problem is that many parents, without even thinking about it, pass on their own bad habits to their kids. If a mother or father is terrified of the dentist, they don’t take their children, thus passing on the fear as it may end up that the child’s first visit to a dentist will involve treatment, and they will see it as a nasty place to go.

Parents must push their fears to one side and take their children to the dentist from an early age so they appreciate that the dentist is there to help them and the better care they take of their teeth combined with regular check ups greatly reduces the likelihood of toothache and subsequent treatment. A brushing routine is also vital, but it is in a child’s nature to question why they have to do something that their parents don’t.

When your child is at the stage to start cleaning their own teeth, clean yours along with them. Make it a fun time for your child and show them that mum or dad does it all the time so they should too. Set a timer so they are cleaning them for the recommended 2 minutes, and show them that all you need is a pea sized dollop of fluoride toothpaste on their brush. By breaking your own bad habits, you are stopping your kids from forming their own.

Putting these figures into practice essentially means that a child who do is diagnosed with ADHD has a one in five chance of having a parent or other close relative that suffers from this condition, yet maybe completely unaware of it.

Some parents have realised that they too are sufferers only when their children have been diagnosed. So what does the latest scientific research tell us, and just how hereditary is ADHD? Scientists in Israel have discovered that there are actually two different genes that could well be the cause of ADHS, but much more research is needed into show up the strength of the hereditary and genetic links.

When you look at the vast range of symptoms that indicate ADHD, the genetic link looks more likely than ever. Restlessness, hyperactivity, easily distracted, attention issues, over excitability and inappropriate social behaviour would suggest the genetic link. Taking this into consideration, the question of is ADHD hereditary has to be in the positive.

There is a double edged sword if parents are suffering from ADHD too however, while they will undoubtedly have an empathetic bond, their own lack of skills when it comes to organising the household could be a major problem. The parenting skills and organising of schedules etc are essential items when raising a family, and these could he sadly lacking, or absent altogether.

In an effort to make the government more aware of the problem of obesity in childhood many UK schools plan on creating a new system that will measure the weight and height of all primary school children that are aged four to five as they enter the school. These measurements will be taken again once the children reach ages 10-11 and leave to go onto secondary school. At the moment the US is already doing this, but the real question is whether it helps or not.

There are many concerns surrounding obese children such as the additional bullying that they often receive and the fact that it is unhealthy for their development. Another concern is that the added scrutiny to a child’s weight by requiring regular school weigh-ins can help fuel the development of eating disorders in some children. Additional issues include concerns over whether it is the governments, schools, or parents responsibility to monitor and control the weight of children.

For parents that want to help their child slim down without causing too much emotional damage it is recommended that they start by looking at their child’s actual feelings on the issue. For instance, if they are being bullied at school a parent nagging them at home will only help isolate the child even more.

Instead of directly confronting a child on their weight, it is recommended that instead parents set a positive example for weight loss by staying away from junk food, exercising on a regular basis, and serving healthy meals at dinner time. This way if everyone is eating healthy no one member of the family is singled out as chubby.
