Most mothers would agree their first choice would be breast feeding but in some cases this is not possible. There are a variety of reasons for this and may include breast infection, HIV infection, prior surgery, previous radioactive treatments, a lack of natural milk, an inability of the baby to suckle, lifestyle and family conflict and work difficulties.

In these circumstances the natural alternative to breast milk is infant formula. Made especially for the baby, most brands contain the nutrients needed for the baby’s growth and future development. Most babies can be given and will accept the formula in a bottle in their first months.

Feeding by bottle does have certain advantages and anyone besides the mother can attend to this regardless of what time of the day it is. The father or partner can become involved in this most important time in an infant’s life. Another advantage is the period between feeds is much longer as the digestion takes a longer period as compared to breast milk. The mother has more time on her hands and the feeding can be done by others.

Bottle feeding is also ideal for any intake monitoring purpose and in very extreme cases any medication prescribed by a doctor may be given through the bottle. Finally the mother can resume her normal life far quicker without having to take care of what she consumes, be it medication or other fluids.

There are also disadvantages to bottle feeding and the main issue with formulas is the quantities and mixing required. Bottles and teats require thorough sterilisation before use and should be kept in a sterilising fluid when not in use. Antibodies that exist in mother’s milk is absent in formulas making the infant far more susceptible to illness. Another factor to consider is the relative high cost of formulas.

Babies on formula feeds may develop wind and constipation problems and may also suffer from constipation. There are many formula brands on the market both in powder form or ready prepared. An iron based formula could be considered which is very beneficial to a baby in its first year. Above all it is important to prepare the formula correctly and to remember to keep all utensils in a clean and sterile state.

How Many Children?

Of course this should be one of the first considerations and you need to think age differences between children. The good thing is that there are many pushchairs on the market which can accommodate multiple children of different ages. Examples include tandem pushchairs which have one seat in front of the other and allows for both newborn babies and toddlers. There is also the classic double buggy with seats situates side by side which can also accommodate both babies and toddlers.

How Will You Use It?

One of the first things you need to think about is what you need to the pushchair for. Of course you need it to transport your baby but you need to think about what circumstances you will use it. If you use your car frequently then you might want to consider buying a travel system with detachable car seat. If on the other hand you use public transport often then a better option would be a light weight stroller that is easily foldable. Similarly if you have more than one child and you shop frequently you may want to invest in a tandem pushchair as they take up less room compared to the standard double buggy.

What Are Your Baby’s Needs?

This is an important consideration. Young babies are not able to support their heads and so need to lie flat, so a pram may be the best option. Alternatively there are many pushchairs and strollers on the market that have adjustable seats with lie-back functionality. Take what’s rightfully yours

Be sure to take advantage of the child tax credit, working tax credit and child benefit available to you. It’s there to help new parents out during a financially stressful time so be sure to put it to good use. Tax credits will vary depending on your situation, but child benefit currently comes to £20 per week for your first child (and an extra £13.20 per week for subsequent children) so it all adds up.

Don’t be snobby

We all want the best for our child but it just makes financial sense to buy certain items second hand. Clothes are a prime example — you can pick up serious bargains at car boot sales or at online auction sites, paying a tiny fraction of what good quality baby clothes would cost you if you were to buy them all new. When you consider just how quickly babies grow out of clothes, it’s something of a no-brainer. National Childbirth Trust (NCT) sales are a great source of cheap items for your baby so see if there are any happening near you — but be prepared for big crowds and serious competition for the real bargains!

Do stay safe

Certain items you won’t want to go second hand with, of course — for example, you want to be sure that you’re getting the safest possible solution when buying a car seat. You can never be sure whether a second hand car seat has been involved in a previous accident which might have compromised its safety, so it’s wise to stick to new products when your baby’s safety is at stake.

Shop around both in store and online

For big purchases like prams, car seats or travel systems then there are great deals to be had if you shop around online, while independent stores may also be willing to cut you a good deal if you’re buying a combination of items. Don’t be afraid to play stores off against one another if needs be to get down to the price you want to pay.

Rely on family for support

If both mother and father are going back to work following maternity/paternity leave then having a family member nearby to help with childcare can make a huge difference to outgoings as nurseries can be very expensive. There’s a case to be argued that the social benefits that nurseries provide can be beneficial to your baby, however, so consider striking a happy balance between family and paid-for childcare.

To keep your child safe when they go online, there are various steps that you can take.  Some of these are things you can do to stop your child from having access to things you do not wish them to see, and others involve talking to them about what is and isn’t safe to do or talk about online, or encouraging them to use one site instead of another.

Parental controls:
Computers, mobile phones, and games consoles where you can access the internet have parental controls.  These allow you to create rules that will control which websites your child can and can’t visit, how long they can stay on line and what words they can and can’t search for.  Different equipment will allow you to do different things, but generally parental controls allow you to block certain websites and e-mail addresses by adding them to filter lists.  You can then password protect these lists so that your child can’t change them.

Some internet service providers also have child safety measures that they offer, so it’s also a good idea to talk to them to find out what they can provide.

Talk to your child about internet safety:
Sit with your child and talk to them about why you are setting these restrictions. Explain to them the sort of sites that you think are suitable and why some others aren’t.  Help them to understand the dangers that are out there. If they know why they need to stay within the boundaries that you set they are more likely to do so, explain in the same way as you would when setting boundaries for where they can play and who with when they’re outside.

Stress to your child the importance of keeping personal information safe.  Teach your child what is and isn’t acceptable for them to talk about with people online and that some people may not be who they seem to be.  Make sure they understand that if anything happens that they’re not sure about then you are there to listen and you won’t be cross with them. If they accidentally go onto a website that’s not suitable, they should tell you so.  This way you can delete it from the computer’s history and add it to your list of unsuitable websites.

Introduce them to child friendly websites and search engines as these are designed to filter out sites and content that is unsuitable for children to see.

Learn ‘how to’ for yourself:
One of the best ways of keeping your child safe is by learning about the internet for yourself.  If you don’t know how it works, or what threats exist, it will be much harder to know what to block your child from seeing or doing while on there.  There are lots of courses designed for adults to help them learn more about computing and the internet, many of which are free.

Keep your eye on things:
Keep the computer that connects to the internet in a family room with the screen facing out into the room where you can see what’s happening.  This way you can see if they are using a chat room or forum, who they are talking to, and what they are saying.

Use the ‘history’ on the computer to monitor which sites your child is accessing and check them for yourself. If you see something you don’t like, you can then block it and/or talk to your child about it.

If you are worried about your child accessing the internet when you are not there, then remove the ability for them to do so, by password protecting the internet access so that they can only access with your permission.
